Alright, folks, it's a new year and a new outlook. Who cares if the world is falling apart now more than ever? Lady GaGa has a smash hit on her hands!
This week "Just Dance" creeps up from #3 to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lady GaGa, doesn't your man-in-a-wig ass know that #2 is dangerous territory for a newcomer pop/dance diva? Just ask Donna Lewis, Jane Child or Nicki French. They all landed there, had a brief celebratory time in the sun, then were taken to the pop firing range and put down.
Time will tell with this broad, though. One interesting point of note is that "Just Dance" was released a full nine months ago in the States. Are we thinking the same thing? Yep, Lady could have gotten knocked up and shot a kid out by now.
Now, what I'd like to know is how the Pussycat Dolls managed to have another hit! "I Hate This Part" is up from #32 to #21. I heard this song several times while back in Pittsburgh over the holidays, and while it might pass for entertainment in that neck of the woods...
Hmmm. Well, admittedly, it is the one song I kept on my iPod from the horrendous Doll Domination album. But after "Whatcha Think About That"âthe one where Missy Elliot says she wants to chew Katy Perry's tuna casserole or somethingâfailed to chart in the Hot 100, I thought these strippers were taken out to the Vegas desert and pushed off a cliff.
"I Hate This Part" is PCD's seventh U.S. Top 40 hit.
Other trash of mention: The Veronicas are up to #29 with "Untouched," Pink is at #35 with "Sober" and Metro Station is #42 with "Seventeen Forever."
God, if I was 17 forever, I'd still be a virgin listening to Cathy Dennis cassette singles. Which wouldn't be so bad if I still had a tape player.
Finally, 15-year-old Miranda Cosgrove's cover of Sugababes' "About You Now" debuts at #51. She performed her by-the-numbers version at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and apparently the tween nation went hog wild and began downloading it. Miranda's "About You Now" appears on the soundtrack of her hit Nickelodeon TV show, iCarly.
David Archuleta's album was put of for pre-order on iTunes this week, and as an incentive, you get his cover of Robbie Williams' "Angels" if you buy now. This self-titled trash is out November 11.
And before you even ask, hell no am I getting this shit! It's highly doubtful anything as classy as "Crush" will be on there.
Speaking of which, my second Daily Beast recommendationâa review of Archuleta's "Crush"âwas posted yesterday. Quite frankly, that site was under-using the term "cougar, so they're just lucky I came along.
A few other random iTunes observations:
1. Can you believe Snow Patrol (#3) and Lady GaGa's (#4) albums are currently outselling Pink (#14)?
2. So is Toby Keith!
3. The Sam Taylor-Wood/Pet Shop Boys single "I'm In Love With A German Film Star" and its remixes are available at the U.S. iTunes store.
"The Shock Of The Lightning"? More like the shock of Oasis charting at #3 last week in the U.K., then dropping to #16. (Ironically, that single has been getting major airplay on multiple stations here in Los Angeles.)
The same goes for the returning Boyzone, whose comeback single "I Love You Anyway" debuted at a so-so #5, but now falls to #13.
Between this and the failure of New Kids On The Block to chart a major hit single with their own foray into the mainstream once again, maybe the window of opportunity for '90s-band comebacks shut down hard about two years ago, after Take That managed to wriggle through.
Ah, well...at least Pink racks up a second week at the top. Plus, Sugababes climb up to #3 with "Girls." Thus far, those broads' only other single to peak at #3 has been "Ugly," back in December 2005.
The U.K. Top 10: 1. "So What" - Pink *2 weeks* 2. "Sex On Fire" - Kings Of Leon 3. "Girls" - Sugababes 4."Disturbia" - Rihanna 5. "Never Miss A Beat'" - Kaiser Chiefs*new* 6. "Miss Independent" - Ne-Yo 7. "I Kissed A Girl" - Katy Perry 8. "When I Grow Up" - Pussycat Dolls 9. "Cookie Jar" - Gym Class Heroes feat. The Dream 10. "In This City" - Iglu & Hartly
Pink has revealed what she misses most about ex husband Carey Hart â his manhood!
The singer, who split from the 33-year-old motocross star earlier this year, says her current single So What is about her 'anger, frustration and heartache' over the break-up.
âI'm very lucky that I can write how I feel and put it into my music, otherwise I'd be a mental patient by now,â she tells the Daily Mirror.
âThis song is about anger, frustration, heartbreak. Quite a lot of the album is about Carey.â
But when asked what she misses most about her ex, 29-year-old Pink â real name Alecia Moore â gets straight to the point.
'I really loved my husband's penis,â she says. âIt was really pretty.â
P!nk has never been afraid to speak her mind, bare her soul, and share her deepest feelings in her songs. As she casually confers, âI have no choice. Itâs what I do.â Indeed, it is what P!nk does. And, her 23 million in album sales, two Grammy Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, and eight top 10 hit singles are proof that the tattooed badass with the heart of a pussycat does what she does well. But, with her fifth studio album, Funhouse (Oct. 28 via LaFace/Zomba), P!nk gets even more personal, more exposed, and more revealing. On her current radio smash âSo What,â P!nk gets real once again but this time itâs infused with her trademark humor as evidenced by such funny-honest lyrics as âI guess I just lost my husband/I donât know where he went/So Iâm gonna drink my money/Iâm not gonna pay his rent.â Having her ex, Carey Hart, in the Dave Meyers-directed video diffused some of the reaction to the lyrical content. âAt first I was kind of irked because everyone was like, âWell, wait. I thought the split was amicable and now sheâs talking shit about him?! What the @#$%â Itâs hypocritical.â But once everyone saw the video and saw that Carey was in it, it shut everybody up, which was lovely,â explains P!nk, who collaborated with Max Martin once again for this track. âCarey hadnât heard the song before he did the video. Thatâs how much he trusts and loves me. He pretty much just rolls his eyes, throws his hands up in the air, and hugs me. He gets it. He gets me. Itâs nice.â
First up, kudos to Pink for topping the U.K. singles chart this week with "So What," a feat she accomplished here in the States a few weeks back.
One can only guess at the annoyed ranting of Noel/Liam Gallagher at having to come in not only second behind Pink, but third, with new Oasis single "The Shock Of The Lighting."
Of course, the real news for those with a pop heart is the return of Boyzone, whose "Love You Anyway"âthe Ronan Keating-led boy band's first new single in eight yearsâdebuts at #5. The track is one of two new songs on upcoming greatest hits collection Back Again... No Matter What.
Here's the vid:
Unmistakable is the slight tinge of Amy Winehouse-revived '60s pastiche in there. But whateverâ"Love You Anyway" is certainly no "Patience," a song that propelled Take That back to the top of the British chart after a decade-long absence almost two years ago.
